Dance Teams
At the end of my Dance unit with my 3rd-6th graders I close with a project where students are broken into Dance Teams and then compete to see who can make the most creative dance. As requirements for their routines, the dance must be 60-90 seconds in length, have a definitive ending, and have solo and synchronized sections. Though I give my students class time to work on their routines, many of them choose to come in and practice during their recess as well. Here is a video of this years 6th grade winner.
RTI Group - We're All In This Together
As a part of our RTI time at the Elementary students that currently don't require interventions get to choose from a variety of classes they can take. During this time I held a music in motion class where my students did a variety of different activities involving music and physical activity. For one of these projects my students voted to learn the dance from the final scene of the film High School Musical, and below is the result.
Space Jam
This original dance was done in my middle school PE classes and was a collaborative work between my students and me. In this video you'll see different sections with individual choreographed moves, partner moves, and moments where the students can freestyle.
Square Dancing
Towards the end of our dance unit in my middle school PE classes we have a day where I teach the students how to square dance. Being as I teach in a rural community where many students live on farms this is often a favorite as many of the students have been to barn dances before. On this day I tell students that they can dress up for extra credit, and as you'll see in the video many take advantage of that. I start by taking the first 30 minutes of class teaching various calls and moves associated with them, then for the last 15 minutes of class we do a few "live" performances.
The Interlude
I learned this dance when I was in college and it has proven to be a favorite for kids of all ages that I've taught over the years. The Interlude, performed here by my 1st graders, is a great dance to use at the beginning of class to get students warmed up and ready to dance for the day.
