Track and Field Day
During one of the last few days of the school year I run a Track and Field meet for all of my elementary students (K-4). We begin preparing for the track meet 2-3 weeks in advance, learning and practicing all of the events, so when it comes time to for the actual event they know exactly where to go and what to do. I also send a message out in the school newsletter so parents/guardians can come and watch their kids. There's always a great turn out and the kids have a blast, plus at the end I always supply a little treat for the kids.
To start the meet I have the students all do a 1/2 mile run, sending them off one grade at a time in waves. After the "distance run" the kids have roughly 40 minutes to go and do whatever field events and races that they want (with the exception of relays and tug-of-war). Once the 40 minutes are up, the K-2nd grade students get together with their grades on the field and watch the 3rd and 4th graders do their relays. Finally we end the event with several bouts of tug-of-war in the middle of the field. I try to start the meet as close to 1:30pm as possible and it is usually done by 3pm or shortly after. Also once the meet is done we allow parents/guardians to sign out their kids if they want to.
