Trench Battle

city, continent, country

Purpose of the Activity: To practice overhand throw and increase upper body and cardiovascular strength.

Suggested Ages: 1-12

Equipment: several tumbling mats, 1 gator skin ball/dodge ball per student, 10 bowling pins (or cones), two flags, 20 cones

Game Objective: The objective of this game is to destroy the other teams barricade, cross over their trench, and capture their flag.

Set Up:
- Split the class into two equal teams
- On the inside of the 10ft line on the volleyball court, lay down a row of tumbling mats and then fold them partially up to create a trench wall
- Halfway between the 3pt line and the volleyball 10ft line place a row of cones. The space between the cones and the trench wall is the Trench
- In the Trench, place enough gator skin balls for each student can have 1
- On the back line of the volleyball court set up 5 bowling pins (or cones), creating a Barricade
- Place a flag at on each end of the gym

Rules:
Students on both teams must start in their respective trenches facing the opposing team. As soon as the game begins the students will attempt to throw their ball over no man's land and the opposite trench to destroy the other teams barricade. However, each student must first perform either push ups or shoulder taps before throwing their ball. When throwing they are supposed to only target the barricade, not other students.

After they have thrown their ball they must exit their trench from the side and go to into either no man's land or behind their own barricade to retrieve another ball. When retrieving a ball the students are absolutely not allowed to go in the Heavy Fire Zone (area between the trench and the barricade) to prevent blocking the other teams throws. Students are also not allowed to block oncoming balls when they are in their own trench.

Once all of the opposing teams pins forming the barricade are knocked down, they may run across to the other teams side, capture the flag, and bring it back to their side. Make sure to remind the students to keep the flag up in the air and not parallel to the floor, as this is not safe.

Tips:

  • (Elementary) As this game is meant for students to practice their overhand throw, make sure to reinforce your overhand throw cues before and during the game. I use the cues Turn-Tummy-"T"-Throw.
  • Adjust amount of shoulder taps or push ups that they need to complete for each different age group. Though I usually allow them to choose either exercise, I typically make the amount of shoulder taps required twice as many as the push up options
  • Before playing this game I usually give a little history lesson about about WWI and the role that trenches played. This lesson is very basic with my younger students and more in depth with my older students who will often times ask more questions and contribute any information that they know as well.
