Army Crawl Challenge

action, aim, armed

Purpose: To increase upper body strength. To work on basic addition.

Suggested Age: K-4

Equipment: 8 hula hoops, 9 folding tumbling mats, 1 scooter per student, beanbags, 4-8 resistance bands

Game Objective: the objective of the game is to collect as many beanbags as possible during the allotted time and return them to your base. Beanbags can be achieved by doing a fitness activity at one of the many stations around the gym

Set Up:

  • Students will be broken up into 4 different teams and sent to each corner of the gym.
  • Set up the hula hoops, tumbling mats, and resistance bands
  • At every hula hoop and tumbling mat place 5 beanbags. Place 15 beanbags on the center mat with the resistance bands
  • Give each student a scooter and have them lay on their stomach in their team's corner
Rules:
When the music starts each student must pull themselves on their belly to once of the stations scattered throughout the gym. Once they arrive at a station they must get off of their scooter and do the fitness activity assigned to that location (see below). Once they complete their exercise they can grab a beanbag from that station and crawl on their belly (on their scooter) back to their base where they drop off their beanbag. Make sure to reinforce that they are NOT allowed to throw their beanbag back to their base. Students are only allowed to take 1 beanbag at a time and if caught cheating will be forced to sit out for a minute. Students also cannot go to the same station 2x in a row. Once the song is over the students must return to their base and total up their beanbag count. The team with the highest number wins.
  • Hula Hoop - 1 circle walk with feet inside the hoop
  • Purple Mat - 5 hand walks
  • Blue Mat - 5 push ups
  • Red Mat - 10 bicep curls with resistance band

Tips:
To increase the math element to the game, once the song ends but before the counting phase you may announce that a certain color of beanbag is worth double and that a different color of beanbag is actually worth -1. You can also announce this before a round and tell the students that they are allowed to place the -1 beanbags in other teams' bases to lower their score.

If students' upper bodies begin to get tired you can switch the exercises to lower body exercises.
