Nutrition Blaster

Activity: Nutrition Blaster

Unit: Nutrition

Age: Middle or High School

Prep: Gather 8-10 common food items and record their fat, carbs, protein, sugar, and calories. Make sure to choose a variety of foods in terms of nutritional content. Place them on a table at the front of the class so everyone can see them. (Ex: Gatorade, Banana, Candy Bar, Granola Bar, Flavored Yogurt, Sunflower Seeds, Carrot, Poptart.)
This can be an individual or group activity.

Description of Activity:
Have each student tear out a piece of scrap paper, write the word Fat as a heading, and number it 1-10 (or however many food items you have). Then give them 1-2 minutes to write down all of the foods in order from least to greatest (or vice versa) in regards to the total fat amount they think each food has per serving size. Once they are all done you will have the class vote and then reorder the foods on the table from left to right (lowest to highest) based on their perception of how much fat is in each item. Once they have finished their collective guess you will reveal the true order and then discuss why.

As you repeat this process for the different categories (carbs, protein, sugar, and calories) the students will likely begin to get better each round, with the most successful round being the calories. You can also award the individual or group that got the most correct extra credit as an option.
