Student Made Games
During the 2017-2018 school year I was very fortunate to have an enrichment period every Tuesday and Thursday for 30 minutes with a group of 9 elementary students 1st-3rd. During this time I would break my students into two separate groups and they would be required to work collaboratively to create a game that could be played in either a small group or for an entire PE class. On Tuesdays the students would create their game with their group and then on Thursday each group would present their game to the other, play it, and then workshop any changes/ways to make the game better.
Though sometimes I allowed the groups to create any form of physical game that they desired, I oftentimes prompted them create games that aligned with whatever unit we were in at the time in our PE classes. This not only helped supplement their skill develop in those areas but also helped generate several new, fun games that I have been able to implement into my general PE classes. Here are some of their favorites:
- Army Crawl Challenge (fitness)
- Mouse in the House (chasing and fleeing)
- Rabbit Robbers (dribbling)
- Santa vs. the Grinch (Christmas / chasing and fleeing)
- Turkey Town (Thanksgiving / fitness / chasing and fleeing)
